Why do push doors have handles?

The outer stiles (vertical members of a frame and panel assembly) of the door need to stay reasonably straight for the door to function. The two middle rails (the horizontal members) helps to keep those outer stiles parallel. The center stiles are there to divide the space to reduce the width of the panels.
