To sand the bottom of a door without removing it, put the sandpaper on the floor, grit side up, and pull the door back and forth across it. Planing is usually the last resort, since it will mean touching up the planed area with a sealer or finish to match the door. A rasp-type plane will often do the best job.
The short answer is yes, hollow core doors can be trimmed. Hollow core doors have a strong block outer frame, which leaves a couple of inches of solid wood at the top, bottom and sides of the door. When it comes to allowing for alterations, this frame makes them a lot more forgiving than you might think.
A circular saw makes a great door cutter. Make sure your saw blade is sharp and has a minimum of 18 teeth. Hold the circular saw against the edge of the door as if you’re ready to cut. With the blade teeth held just to the waste side of the scored line, mark the masking tape along the opposite edge of the base plate.
Can you cut down a solid wood door?
Exterior wooden doors can have a core of either chipboard or solid wood with veneer on both sides, or they can have solid multiple panels inside a solid wood frame. Either way, they have a perimeter that can be cut down on either side or on the ends.
How much can you trim a solid wood door?

How much wood is in a hollow core door?
Hollow core doors have a 3-inch block of wood inside the bottom of the door. Make sure that the bottom of the door is still solid. If it is hollow, you’ll need to replace the section of the wood block that was removed during cutting.
Hand-planing is only practical for removing 1/4 inch or less from the bottom of the door. If you have to remove more, it’s easier to do it with a power planer, circular saw or belt sander.
How can you tell if a door is solid wood?
You can tell if the door is hollow or solid just by knocking on it. If there is an echo, it’s hollow. The weight of the door is another way of telling if it’s hollow or solid. If the door wobbles when you knock on it, it’s probably not solid.
